Hoi An’s Ancient Town

Recently topping Travel +Leisure‘s Best City in the World list, Hoi An’s famous Ancient Town is located along the banks of the Thu Bon River some 25 kilometres from Da Nang in Central Vietnam. Between the 15th and 18th Centuries, Hoi An was heralded as the most prosperous port of trade in Vietnam. During this time, trade flourished between Hoi An and external countries, including Japan, China, Holland, and India. Its principal exports were ceramics, silk, and woodwork. Although today’s Hoi An has replaced mercantilism for tourism, the city’s history as a major trade town imbues it with a unique blend of foreign and Vietnamese culture.

A quick walk through Hoi An’s Ancient Town readily demonstrates the diversity of influences that permeate the whole of the city. There are Vietnamese-styled homes overgrown with moss situated beside Chinese-styled shophouses adorned with vivid lanterns, synonymous with the heart of Hoi An. Most of the walls in the Old Town are painted in an iconic yellow hue.  This colour symbolises status and royalty in Vietnamese culture. Flourishes of French colonial structures pepper the city, and in the heart of the Ancient Town, you can even find Hoi An’s famous Japanese Covered Bridge.

Hoi An’s steady transformation into a premier beach vacation destination has resulted in the development of many hostels, homestays, and hotels. Recent years have even seen the introduction of the city’s first grand hotels and skyscrapers – among them, the luxurious Hotel Royal.

Where is The Deck?

The Deck is located atop the illustrious Hotel Royal. Just a 10 minute walk away from Hoi An’s Ancient Town, or a 15 minute taxi ride from An Bang Beach. The hotel sits on the bank of the Thu Bon River. The Deck is located on the 9th floor of the hotel’s Wakaku Wing.

Hidden Hint: The elevators to reach The Deck are located in the Wakaku Wing beside the River Bar Lounge on the ground floor.

Arriving at the Hotel Royal, we encountered their grand reception hall. Access to The Deck is open to the public. So when you visit, just proceed directly to the elevators located to the left and head on up to the 8th floor. From there walk up the final flight of stairs to The Deck on the 9th floor. And on this 9th floor is when the majesty of The Deck experience fully unfolds itself to you.

The Best 360-Degree Rooftop View in Hoi An

Situated well above other buildings in Hoi An, The Deck showcases an unrivalled view of Hoi An’s stunning sunsets. The Deck’s perch above the rest of the city offers outlooks to inland Vietnam to the north and south, and a peek over the Laos border to the west. These views are open to the public from 4 p.m until midnight. The views made even more enjoyable with some of the best cocktails on offer that the Hidden team have come across in Hoi An.

The rooftop bar boasts an unhindered 360-degree view of Hoi An. The luxurious accommodations of a high-end bar, coupled with the view of the lantern-lit historical town is a singular experience that cannot be matched in Hoi An.

Hidden Hint: During inclement weather, the Hotel Royal’s Attic is a keen alternative to The Deck. The 8th floor Attic Bar is currently being renovated to a Jazz Bar and features dancing events on the last Friday of each month.

A Stylish Rooftop Pool Bar

The dome-shaped bar also features a glamorous swimming pool made from natural stone. As with any proper tropical pool setting, The Deck is populated with a healthy smattering of umbrellas and sunbeds. One portion situated beside the bar for more parched patrons, another situated for an ideal view of the Thu Bon River.  Hidden can’t think of a better way to cool off from the relentless heat of the South East Asian sun than a quick dip in the rooftop pool. Perhaps followed by a cocktail tor two while admiring the glimmering lamps of the Ancient Town as the markets begin to open for the night.

Hidden Hint: Public pool hours are from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Consider wearing swimwear beneath your regular clothes. The Deck does not have changing rooms, but there are some available in The Attic on the 8th floor.

Innovative, Hoi An-Themed Signature Cocktails

As you might expect, The Deck is host to a fully stocked bar carrying classic cocktails, an extensive selection of European wines, and champagnes in the class of Taittinger Brut Reserve and Laurent Perrier Cuvee Rose. What Hidden found that differentiates The Deck from other bars are its unique, Vietnamese-themed craft cocktails. These signature cocktails feature Vietnamese herbal liqueurs paired with regional tropical fruit juices and spices. Many are served in locally crafted clay pots or bamboo cups.

The Deck’s cocktails are specially designed to resonate with a piece of Vietnamese culture. For example: ‘The Streets of Hoi An’ is a vodka cocktail coloured a vivid green from pandan leaves.  Whereas ‘The Little Garden’ is a rum cocktail with pennywort juice, a speciality of the Tra Que Village, which supplies the region with fresh, organic herbs and vegetables.

Hidden Hint: 2 for 1 Happy Hour at The Deck runs from 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

Gin lovers will find a treat in the ‘Ginger ‘n’ Clay’, served in a traditional blue clay pot from the Thanh Ha Pottery Village, where traditional ceramics have been made in Hoi An since the 16th Century. Gin lovers will be further delighted by The Deck’s selection of 12 quality gins.  These include Monkey 47, Thomas Dakin, and The Botanist.

Party Nights with a DJ at The Deck

The Deck is more than just your average sunset bar.  On Friday and Saturday evenings from 5 p.m to 8 p.m, the venue hosts a DJ to elevate the vibe. It’s the perfect place to begin the night with a couple of cocktails before foraying into Hoi An’s late night scene.
